On August 4, the transitional military council and the coalition for freedom and change signed a constitutional declaration paving the way for a transition to civilian rule in Sudan. A sovereign council with military and civilian members has been appointed and will rule Sudan for an interim period of three years until elections are held.

The constitutional declaration has been hard won for the Sudanese people. Protests aiming to topple Omar al-Bashir’s regime began in December 2018. The mass demonstrations were met with brutal force and violence by the regime’s security and military forces. Hundreds were detained, injured and killed.

Does the sovereign council have the support of the people? Can the constitutional declaration pave the way for free and fair elections? And will the economic hardships of the Sudanese finally come to an end?

All are welcome!
