Belo Monte: Announcement of a War

11.10.2017 20:30 - English

Film, Reflection & Popcorn with the Natural Resources & Climate Change Unit at LawTransform.

LawTransform invites you to the screening of the documentary “Belo Monte: Announcement of a War” followed by a discussion moderated by Lara Côrtes.

The Belo Monte Dam, located in the heart of the Amazon forest, is a hydroelectric dam currently under construction, which on completion will be the fourth largest in the world. According to the one-sided claims of the Brazilian government, the project is a move towards more sustainable and renewable energy. However, the project has raised serious concerns about the dam’s environmental, social and cultural impact, and has provoked strong reactions from civil society.

“Belo Monte: Announcement of a War” (2012) is the result of extensive research in the controversial decision making process leading to the approval of the construction of the dam. The decision making process excluded environmental studies, economic studies, human rights, concerns from indigenous leaders, and caused outrage in parts of the Brazilian society.

LawTransform will organize a follow-up screening on the same topic on October 25th with the documentary “Belo Monte: After The Flood” (2016).

Both events are part of the activities of the project “Elevating water rights to human rights: Has it strengthened marginalized peoples’ claim for water?” (Natural Resources & Climate Lawfare Unit/Lawtransform).

Popcorn and other snacks will be served. The event is free and open to all. Photo: Cinedelia.

All are welcome!
