The Global South: From Recipient to Resource
Celebrating the International Day for South-South Cooperation.
September 12th marks the International day for South-South Cooperation. To celebrate this, Bergen Global and the Norwegian Agency for Exchange Cooperation (Norec) will host a panel-discussion on Norway’s support to South-South and Triangular Cooperation.
The event will be opened by State Secretary Jens Frølich Holte from the Norwegian Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
Researcher Elling Tjønneland of CMI, Director Jon Wigum Dahl of the International Department of Haukeland University Hospital, Juma K. Ochieng at Norwegian Red Cross and Deputy Director Marit Bakken of Norec together with Tale Kvalvaag of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) will capitalize on their experiences of South-South Cooperation when looking at the way forward and how Triangular cooperation can be further utilized as an effective tool for development and achievement of the sustainable development goals.
In addition, there will be a launch of the publication South-South in Action jointly produced by Norec and the UN Office for South South Cooperation, describing the role of Norway as a Triangular cooperation facilitator and actor. In 1978, the UN established a unit with the purpose of promoting and financing development cooperation between countries in the Global South.
This form of development-cooperation has proven to be efficient, building on existing competencies and resources in the global south. Many former low-income countries have reached the level of middle-income and are acting as both recipients of aid while at the same time being donors. Traditional donors in the Global North have also contributed into this work through so-called Triangular Cooperation. In Norway, Norec is a main contributor, having facilitated some 100 projects since 2002 where volunteers and professionals are exchanged between cooperating institutions in different countries of the global south.
