The Kenyan Election: What Happened?

11.10.2017 09:30 - English

With Matthew Gichohi (UiB), Ingvild Aagedal Skage (UiB), Svein-Erik Hansen Helle (UiB), Arne Tostensen (CMI) and Lise Rakner (UiB) in conversation with Siri Gloppen (LawTransform, UiB and CMI).

On 1 September, Kenya’s supreme court declared Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory in the presidential election invalid and ordered a new vote to be held within 60 days. The six-judge bench ruled 4-2 in favour of a petition filed by Odinga, who claimed the electronic voting results were hacked and manipulated in favour of the incumbent. The decision to nullify the result, a first in Kenya, sets up a new race for the presidency between Kenyatta and the veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The new election is scheduled for 26 October, but what can we expect? In this breakfast seminar we will start off with a short introduction to the current situation. Then three main issues will be discussed:

1. The re-election,

2. Th
e court decision,

3. The role of international observers.

The debate will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

The panel will consist of:

  • Matthew Gichohi (Postdoc, UiB)

  • Ingvild Aagedal Skage (Postdoc, UiB)

  • Svein-Erik Hansen Helle (PhD-scholar, UiB)

  • Arne Tostensen (Senior Researcher, CMI)

  • Lise Rakner (Professor, UiB)

Moderator:
